Cosmetology Basics

Q: What is Cosmetology?
A: Cosmetology is the professional treatment of your skin, hair, and nails. Everything from hair styling to manicures to body hair removal is considered a part of cosmetology. If you are licensed in cosmetology you are called a cosmetologist.

Q: Is a Cosmetologist the same as an Esthetician?
A: An Esthetician is one discipline of cosmetology. A Cosmetologist will often specialize in one specific area such as Hair Stylist, Manicurist, Electrologist, or esthetician.

Q: Why do I need a license to be a Cosmetologist?
A: If you wish to practice cosmetology in the United States, a state license is necessary. Exact schooling requirements differ from state to state. The reason this profession is becoming more and more regulated is because of increasingly stringent safety guidelines and the threat of lawsuits. To continue the practice of cosmetology, you must renew your cosmetology license every two years. The renewal process will depend on the state in which you are practicing.
